Public policy must be based on positive outcomes and evidence. Cuts to research funding and Statistics Canada and the muzzling of our scientists is hurting our economy and our country. As a small business owner, my best decisions have been based on data, not ideology. I will bring Canada’s best thinkers and researchers back into our government.
Stephen Harper’s government has grown secretive and closed off to citizens. Too much power has been concentrated in the hands of unelected officials in the Prime Minister’s Office.
Our commitment to evidence based decision making begins with open government. We will amend the Access to Information Act to ensure that open government is the default position of the Federal government, including the Prime Minister’s and all Minister’s offices. We believe that openness and transparency lead to greater accountability.
We will restore the authority of independent government watchdogs giving them a stronger oversight role in Government, the Parliamentary Budget office will become a more independent stronger watchdog for Canadians.
We will take the muzzle off Canada’s scientists and given them a strong independent voice to speak to scientific evidence and ensure it is considered in the development of public policy in Canada. We will restore the important research of Statistics Canada. All these decisions will seek to ensure that data, scientific evidence and research are supported, funded and integrated into the public policy decision process.
